(Published 6.12.10)

Morrisons is today confirmed as the supermarket partner for Teignbridge District Council as part of its plan to regenerate the Broadmeadow area of Teignmouth. The deal, which is subject to final contract and due diligence, will see an overall investment in the project in excess of £20 million, providing a 20,000 square foot (sales area) supermarket and other benefits, which include:· Over 275 new jobs inclusive of the supermarket and new employment opportunities arising from the serviced employment land,· Playing fields brought back into use on the upper plateau area,· New serviced employment site for workshops and industrial units, A new link road to serve the Broadmeadow development, which includes the new supermarket and existing sports centre and nursery.Broadmeadow was once a refuse tip and was then used as sports fields for many years. Concerns about contamination and safety led to the fields being closed for sports in 2001. Cllr Alan Connett, Leader of Teignbridge Council said:"Since May 2009 Teignbridge has been developing this scheme to secure a major new employer and investment for Broadmeadow and for Teignmouth."We have worked hard to deliver a first class scheme for Broadmeadow and are delighted to have secured Morrisons. This will broaden the choice for shoppers in the area and alongside we will have other improvements too. We expect to release further details later this month."The economic regeneration and planning teams at Teignbridge deserve some well-earned credit for this achievement. The town's district councillors have also been involved in agreeing the criteria we put before potential bidders and how the various bids would be assessed." Mark Thompson, Development Executive for Morrisons said:"We are delighted to be selected as the preferred development partner for this exciting scheme, and look forward to working with the council to bring forward a formal planning application with many benefits for the area. "This is a wonderful opportunity to bring our fresh food offer, matched with great value and top quality service, to people in Teignmouth and its surrounding areas."Teignbridge earlier prepared a regeneration vision for the Broadmeadow area. The vision for the estate sets out the opportunities to improve its structure and identity, create a better work and leisure environment and attract more businesses and jobs. By regenerating Broadmeadow and encouraging investment, the aim is that Teignmouth as a whole will benefit. Cllr David Cox, Teignbridge Council Ward Member for Teignmouth West said:"I'm very pleased that Broadmeadow will be used for sports again; at this time of austerity this investment really welcome. West Teignmouth is one of the most deprived wards in Devon, so it's great news that 275 new jobs will be created. I hope Morrisons will work with Kingsway Residents Association and West Bank, so that local Residents get a chance of a job."
